Announcing Pregnancy to Kids – The Story of the Four Elephants

Announcing Pregnancy to Kids

Announcing your pregnancy to family and friends, you know, of the adult kind, comes fairly easy, even if you come up with some elaborate surprise plan, since they pretty much understand the idea of pregnancy and having a baby.

But what about announcing pregnancy to kids?

I didn’t plan on announcing our pregnancy to our kids until I was at least 10 or so weeks, but we ended up telling them sooner since there was a family member- who shall not be named because I still love him/her – who just loved talking about it too much. We were afraid the kids would find out from someone else before we could tell them.

Being the person that I am, I couldn’t just tell them straightforward, “Hey, Mom’s having another kid!”, so I came up with a way for them to basically tell themselves, in a story since my oldest, now 7, can read.

Background: Each of my kids has an elephant. We started doing this after one of my nieces had a favorite elephant that my son also liked when she came to visit. We got him one, named Karl, for his first Christmas (I believe…). After that, when my daughter and son were born, they each got their own elephants named Karla and Karlos.

This is how we told them, with the story called “The Four Elephants”.

They were so excited! I was nervous telling them so soon, but thank God all is now going well!

When to Tell Your Child You’re Pregnant

Of course, when you decide to tell your kids about a pregnancy is totally up to you and how you feel about it. Many people choose to wait until they’re at least in the 2nd trimester, especially when they’re telling little kids who may not understand if a loss should occur.

Other people just tell their kids when they find out. Again, that’s totally up to you! Either way, have fun with it!

So tell me: When did you announce your pregnancy to your kids? Leave a comment below!

My sister told me about her pregnancy by taking a picture of the pregnancy test and emailing it to me!!! I loved it! I was so excited!!! I can’t wait until the baby is here! Still a few months to go, but I am waiting patiently!!!

I found it harder to tell our older kids about another baby, but it all turned out great.

I love your idea of the Elephant story to announce a new birth to your children!!! When my sister told her 3 year old son about a new brother coming, he completely dismissed it. LOL I am sure that it’s because he hasn’t experienced it before, and it not sure what is actually happening!!!

I love the ultrasound picture!! I have the ultrasound pictures on my wall of my nephew, and soon-to-come nephew!!! The first one was called “peanut”, so my sister named this one “cashew”!! LOL (just for the ultrasound pictures, of course!)
