Pregnancy Week 26
The end is near! I can see the light!
I mean, it’s still about 11 weeks off until the baby arrives, but he’s almost here! Still a reason to celebrate, right?
On Saturday, I’ll be in my third trimester, but now I’m in Pregnancy Week 26. I’m already beginning to feel the effects of it: increased fatigue, inability to get comfortable sitting or in bed, Braxton Hicks, increased backache, etc. While it seems like I’m complaining, I’m actually excited. It’s almost all over!
Alright, I’ll admit: I am not thrilled about the whole being-uncomfortable-in-bed thing. I am a terrible sleeper by nature, and adding this to the mix isn’t appealing to me in the least bit. I have multiple pillows, a foam pad just for me on top of my mattress, comfortable pajamas, but still, I’m tossing and turning.
It’s all for a good cause. It’s all for a good cause. I just have to remember that.
This afternoon I will know the results of my gestational diabetes blood test. I had to endure the three-hour test this time around due to elevated results earlier in the pregnancy. I have been on a diabetic diet of sorts, watching my carbs and increasing the amounts of protein and fiber I have in my diet. If I have elevated results once more, I may have to test my glucose levels and be monitored more for the duration of the pregnancy, depending on how bad things are in my system.
Here are my thoughts:
- Both of my kiddos came early, measuring the size of an average baby at 40 weeks (my son was expected to be 9 lbs or more if he came on time, and my daughter was 7 lbs three weeks early!). Large babies in previous pregnancies can be an indication of gestational diabetes. (Note: While they are tall for their ages and look huge, my kids are both incredibly healthy weight-wise. We just make big babies/kids. Did I mention my husband is over 6’3?)
- I haven’t gained that much weight in this pregnancy as I did the other two, yet my blood sugar levels are off. In fact, I weigh less now than I did after giving birth to my daughter and I’m still a far ways off from that weight! Hmm..
- If I need to be monitored more, that means more ultrasounds to check on the size of the baby. While that excites me, I’m worried about the effects of the ultrasounds on the baby.
- If I do have gestational diabetes, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will be working my butt of post-pregnancy to lose all pregnancy weight plus an extra 20-30 lbs to get myself back to a healthy state and to prevent Type 2 diabetes, which runs in the family.
I passed the glucose test! It was close, but I still passed. Phew! I need to continue my diet and have an extra ultrasound at 34 weeks to check on the baby’s size, but that’s all. No finger picking or additional testing!
And in other good news: I didn’t gain any weight this time around! Last time I gained 6 lbs, and surprisingly, even though I ate like crazy over Christmas break, I stayed the same. Since the baby has about 5-6 more pounds to gain, I’ll expect that in the next few weeks.
